Travel is the movement of the people all over the world between relatively distant geographical locations for any duration, with or without the means of transport. The Most Popular Summer Travel

In wintertime, in countries where it’s cold, there’s nothing like a tropical holiday to put the snow and ice out of mind, but what about when it’s hot out? Where do people go during the summer? While everyone probably has their own travel idiosyncrasies and pet destinations, a pattern emerges. Generally people like going to places that have seen moments of great historical significance. These are frequently old cities, and as such they are usually beautiful and full of their own unique charms. They look for fun activities to do, beautiful things to see, and of course, delicious food to eat! No talk about summer travel is complete without mentioning Europe.

Think Italy: the vineyards of the countryside, the wonderful food and the beauty of the sun-washed roofs of Tuscany are unlike anywhere else. The museums house truly one-of-a-kind art you can’t see in person any other way (Think Michelangelo’s David!) There are biking tours available where you can travel through vineyard country in a new and interesting way. You can take a short train anywhere in Italy and end up in a bustling city like Rome, where you can walk around the Palatine hill and feel the old splendour of Rome, or go to a place like Cinque Terra, where the hiking is gorgeous and you can eat a pesto-topped pizza by the water in the village where pesto was invented!

If it’s mountains or extreme sports you want, go to Switzerland. They have all levels of hiking, from professionally guided glacier climbing excursions to super-casual mountain walking trails that you can simply embark on without paying a fee or hiring a guide. But there’s a host of extreme sports there too: hang gliding, sky-diving, canyoning, and more. There’s hardly a more dramatic landscape than Switzerland’s to experience an adrenalin charge in the great outdoors!

If it’s history you want, all European countries are loaded! Perhaps the three best cities where simply walking around gives you the feel of history are London, Berlin, and Paris. Go to Churchill’s underground bunker and see where World War II was won, or for older history go to the Tower of London. In Paris there seems to be the rich feeling of history lingering in the air, and you can’t walk by the Seine without feeling it. Meanwhile in Berlin, the Nazi history isn’t even the most recent world-changing event to take place there, as that distinction goes to the Berlin Wall. As you walk around in downtown Berlin, you’ll notice yourself crossing back and forth over a kilometre-long strip of inlaid bricks in the road: this connotes where the Berlin wall used to be!

Fall Travel Destinations

It’s that time of year again, when the days are getting shorter, nights a little crisper, and fall is in the air. Surprisingly, this time of year is also when many people plan their vacations, whether it is a day trip, or a weekend getaway. There are a number of reasons for this, Summer crowds have died down, costs for lodging are cheaper, and of course one of the biggest reasons, the changing of the seasons and the beautiful colors that are all around.

There are many different fall travel destinations, too many to name all at once, but here are a few of the ones that are at the top of many people’s list. A lot really depends on where you live, and what your budget is like. One of the best places to go in the fall, no matter what your budget may be is into the mountains. Fall offers a spectacular display of colors, the leaves are changing, and you can see browns, yellows, and reds. New England is a great place, as well as Colorado, Montana, and Utah for fall colors. For many, this experience is just a short drive, not costing too much, with many stops along your way. Quaint shops and stores are often still open, and offer the travel many cheap meals and inexpensive deals.

One of the best things about fall is the cooler temperatures. There are many different National Parks that are just too hot or too crowded during the Summer months, and Fall can be a time when you should visit. Most people are aware of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but there are many other Monuments and Parks in the area as well. Some of these include Zion National Park, Arches, both in Southern Utah, or the Colorado National Monument, just to name a few. Often at this time of year, campgrounds, lodges, and restaurants are offering special incentives to get in travelers before shutting down for the Winter.

Speaking of cooler overall temperatures, many people love Las Vegas, but going there during the Summer months can be overwhelming, not just because of the crowds, but the heat as well. The Fall is a great time to visit Las Vegas, as well as just about anywhere in Southern California. There is so much to see and do, and prices can be a lot more reasonable. Special deals abound, so your dollar can go much farther.

These are just a few of the popular travel destination choices. It is easy to find many more online from a variety of different travel sites. This is a great time of year for sightseeing, enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. You can get great deals, and have a great time before having to hunker down for the long cold Winter months that are coming just around the corner.

Travel Destination Ignorance

Madeira cake from France and Tenerife in Bulgaria

The other day, I was sitting at my favourite restaurant when I overheard a conversation that went something like this:

First Person“I think I am going to have a slice of Madeira cake”

Her Friend: “That’s a good idea, I’ll join you. Not that I’ve got a clue why they call it Madeira cake, have you?”

First Person“I think it’s named after some place in France.”

I am not sure why that sort of ignorance about places makes me feel so frustrated. After all, why should everyone be as fascinated by travel and far away places as I am? Whatever the reason, I just could not help myself interrupting the two women as soon as they had ordered their cake to inform them that Madeira is a Portuguese island about four hundred miles off of the north African coast in the Atlantic ocean. I added that it makes a fabulous holiday destination but did bother to tell them that it is actually not one island but an archipelago and actually an autonomous region of Portugal.

Just as well – their expressions told me that I had already said more than they were interested in knowing.

This attitude of having little or no interest in travel destinations is actually very common and it is not confined to people who are generally under educated. Frequent examples can be seen on television quiz shows when contestants who are obviously well educated stumble on simple questions like;

Which of the following is not a Caribbean island

(A) Jamaica

(B) Cuba

(C) Majorca

(D) Barbados

Even more incredible are the people you sometimes overhear in a travel agent, booking holidays to resorts without having any interest as their location as long as its warm and sunny with cheap booze available.

Travel destination ignorance is not just a British thing. An air stewardess once told me a story about an American couple visiting their parents country of origin, Bulgaria, one February. They had used a travel agent in New York to plan their journey and book the two flights that were involved. The first flight took them to London where they boarded the ongoing flight to complete their journey. When this flight landed at Reina Sofia airport the couple looked a little flustered and hesitated at the top of the flight steps, turning to the stewardess to ask why everywhere looked so sub tropical and sunny, and adding that their parents had always told them that Bulgaria was cold in February. At first, the stewardess was at a loss to think of anything that could possibly explain how someone trying to get to Bulgaria in Eastern Europe could end up on a flight to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Then she realized that the name of Bulgarias capital city is Sofia. She asked the couple whether they thought they had boarded a flight to Sofia, Bulgaria. The answer was yes and it turned out that their travel agent had probably just typed Sofia Flights into her computer and accepted the results that the query gave without questioning any further!
